There are walls in the hotel that are destroyed and need to be painted and the roof of the room was full of Humidity. Safety box in the room was not nailed in the wall so was not safe to store money or passport."

Athens is a city of hills and squares, with the Acropolis in the middle and the streets running out from it in every direction. Syntagma and Plaka sit on the northern side of the rock, Psiri and Monastiraki to the north-west, Koukaki to the south. Where you stay decides whether you climb to the Parthenon on foot or take the metro, and whether your evenings are in the tourist squares or in a neighbourhood. Below are nine hotels in Athens, grouped by three choices, with the star rating, guest score, address and nearest stop for each.

Athens runs on its metro and its trolleybuses, and the airport line connects the centre with the coast. The metro is cheap and frequent, and the stations at Syntagma, Monastiraki and Akropoli put most of the sights within a stop or two. The city is also walkable, with the pedestrian street around the Acropolis linking the main districts, which is why so many people end up on foot whatever they planned. The walk from Syntagma to Monastiraki takes about fifteen minutes and passes most of the central sights on the way.
Syntagma and Plaka
Syntagma is the modern centre, with the parliament and the big hotels, and Plaka below it is the old town: narrow streets, tavernas and the Roman agora, all under the north slope of the Acropolis. It is the most convenient place to stay for a first trip, and the most expensive. The streets are narrow and busy, with the souvenir shops below and the tavernas above, and the Acropolis is a fifteen-minute climb from the square.

Electra Rhythm is the best balance here: a 9.5 score, four minutes from the metro and a short walk into Plaka. Ermou 26 is the cheaper of the three on the same street, with the shopping on the doorstep. Athens Capital is the grand option, on the square with the view from the roof, and it costs roughly twice as much as the others.
Psiri and Monastiraki
Psiri and Monastiraki are the old commercial quarters, now full of bars, restaurants and the Sunday flea market. It is the liveliest part of central Athens at night and the cheapest of the three areas, with the metro at Monastiraki connecting everything. The flea market runs on Sundays, and the streets around it are full of shops selling records, furniture and old tools.

Athens Center Square is the value pick of the whole page: a 8.8 score for £68, with the market and Psiri around it. athensdot is the small design option in the middle of the bars, and NLH Monastiraki is the most comfortable, with the metro and the flea market a few minutes away.
Koukaki and the Acropolis
Koukaki sits under the south slope of the Acropolis, next to the Acropolis Museum and the pedestrian street that runs around the rock. It is a residential neighbourhood with restaurants rather than souvenir shops, and it is quieter at night than Plaka while still being a short walk from everything. The Acropolis Museum is at the bottom of the hill, and the entrance to the site is a short walk further on.

Dream House is the best value in this part of the city: a 9.5 score for £94, four minutes from the metro and a short walk from the museum. The rooms are small and the stairs are steep, which is the trade for the price and the position. NLH Fix is the most polished and the closest to the metro, and Ilissos is the larger, older option with the lower price and the longer walk, which is a fair trade for a room with a view of the rock.
Before you book: five practical checks
- Expect peak rates in spring and early autumn. The weather is best then, and the cruise crowds and city-break visitors arrive together, so the Plaka hotels move first.
- Check the metro line before the district. Syntagma, Monastiraki and Akropoli are on different lines, and a hotel near the wrong one adds a change to every journey.
- Decide between the old town and a neighbourhood. Plaka is for a first visit and a short trip; Koukaki and Psiri are better value for a longer stay.
- Book the Acropolis ticket for early morning. The site is exposed and crowded by mid-morning, and a timed entry decides how much of the day you keep.
- Ask about a balcony room away from the street. Central Athens is loud at night, and the difference between a street room and an inner one decides whether you sleep.

One thing catches people out: Athens is built around the Acropolis, so a hotel described as central can be on the wrong side of the rock, and the walk around it takes twenty minutes rather than two. Check whether your address is north or south of the hill before you book, because that decides whether Plaka is a stroll or a taxi. The pedestrian street around the rock is the fastest way between the two sides, and it is worth knowing which end of it you are near.
